Marquetry

Marquetry is a technique of using wood inlays to create art pieces such as portraits, landscapes or landmark scenery. This technique can also be applied to create unique patterns or motif on furniture.


History of Marquetry

Marquetry started as far back as 3500bc. Egyptians used wood inlay, but during the Dark Ages the art of veneering was almost lost and then revived in the late fourteenth century, motif of landscapes to figures and inlay banding were seen. In 1562 the fretsaw was invented in Germany. In 1572 the French started to use wood inlay in furniture. After 1818, the first veneer slicer was invented. Between 1920 and 1940 wall panels became popular.
